Japanese christmas traditions!

 Kia Ora bloggers,

Since swimming lessons have started this term we had some ako activities to continue on with, I chose to do the Christmas classroom, for this activity I chose to do Japan and learned all about what traditions they do during Christmas. I have learned many traditions that they do in japan, Japanese culture is a lot different than New Zealand culture so it was a lot different to learn about. Here is my classroom slide, you can click on each piece of decoration or picture and it will bring you to a slide I have written all about Christmas in Japan.

Maths - chicken run & How many mermaids?

 Kia ora bloggers,

This week for maths we have been doing an animation about a task for canta maths we had to figure out. The task was about how many mermaids there were in the rock pool, we had to teach others how to figure out this task. I found this task not too challenging but still challenging enough. There ended up being 3 mermaids, 5 fish, and 4 octopi. Here is my animation about the rock pool, and a small warm-up chicken run task.

Super Sign Language!

 Kia Ora bloggers,

This week is national sign language week, sign language is an official language of New Zealand so it is important that we new zealanders know how to at least sign our names. This wednesday before tec we learned a bit about sign language and went onto a website where we can learn all about sign language but in a fun way here is a link to the website, Ninja sing language. We learned how to sign different things like colours, fruit, drinks, family members (e.g mother, father, brother, sister), numbers and the elphebet. We also had to make a video of us signing our names, here is my video. Do you know how to sign your name?

Movie Maths!

 Kia Ora bloggers,

We have been learning about 24 hour time and how to convert AM/PM, I found this not too challenging and quite easy, our task yesterday and today was to pick 3 movies and convert the running time into minutes instead of hours, then we had to write the time the movie starts and get a buddie to answer the questions on our slide (when the movie will finish), here is my slide with the questions and answers on it. Have you ever thought about what times would be in 24 hour time?

Minecraft Maths!

Kia Ora bloggers,
Last week for maths we have been doing revision on clocks/24 hour time, I found this quite easy as I already knew how to do it. On Friday our task was to make a digital and analog clock on Minecraft, the digital clock had to say in 24 hour time what the analog clock says mine is 3:00pm but in 24 hour time it is 15:00 or 1500, but if I had chosen AM the 24 hour time would be 03:00 or 0300.

Awesome Literacy!

 Kia Ora bloggers,

For the past couple of weeks in literacy we have been planning and beginning to make our video essays, to do this we had many genre study sessions in literacy and then we got to pick a genre from what we had been studying, I chose to do horror because I enjoy watching horror films and the adrenaline you get from watching them, first, we had to make write our scripts using the TEXAS format, which are basically just essays but a slight difference, now most of us are to actually make a video, for our video, we have to put clips and pictures from the genre, we are doing and speak over the video using our essay script. Since I have not yet finished my video essay here are some screenshots of the process so far. Have you ever made a video essay?

Spin Wheel Outcomes!

Kia ora bloggers,
For the past few weeks in maths, we have been working on how many outcomes there can be when flipping a coin, first, we did this using a diagram which took a long time, then we learned how to do it the quick way only using an equation, after doing the coin-flipping outcomes we moved onto doing a spin wheel with 4 sides instead of only 2, once we had learned everything we had to make a voice-over animation on how to do it the quick way, here is my video. Have you ever learned how to do this before?

Exciting engineering!

Kia Ora bloggers,

This term for inquiry we are doing the "wonder" project and looking at engineering and how to make our own rockets, for this inquiry we have engineers that come in ever tuesday to help us out with our rockets, another task to help us out with this project was to make our own parachute, for this task we had many different materials too choose from, and the objective was to make the slowest and most controlled parachute, the parachute had to hold two nut bolts, my group used 2 sheets of fabric, masking tape and some string. After making our parachute we had to get it tested to see how long it took to fall, ours took roughly 2 seconds, here is a photo of our final parachute design. Have you ever made a parachute?

Literacy film noir intro plan

Kia Ora bloggers,
This week for literacy we have been looking at the genre "film noir", some of the conventions include, detectives, guns, rain, and black and white, these are only a few of the conventions and there are many more. Here is my plan

The introduction starts with the parents fighting in the “dream” mansion, (it is called the dream mansion because the “perfect” family of four lives there and the whole town thinks they are perfect) the body is found under the mansion’s stairs after Amanda (the mum) and Mark (the dad)  have a fight and the oldest child mysteriously goes missing into the unknown, the parents then blame each other for the missing her going missing, more and more children go missing each day until they smell a gross smell coming from under their stairs each day they look under there and get closer but not quite getting to the smell.

Pattern problems

Kia Ora bloggers, this week for maths we have been working on pattern problems, we had to figure out the rule of the pattern, the rule for my problem is to add 4 to the previous term. Have you ever made a pattern problem?
Bye, everyone!

Matariki Art!

Kia Ora bloggers,

In Maori, we have been looking at Matariki and the southern lights/ aurora's, today we started a piece of art to do with these lights. Here are some facts we have learned:

The name Aurora comes from the Latin word that means sunrise or the Roman goddess of dawn.

An Aurora is a natural light that appears in the sky, usually, the color is green but can sometimes be either blue or red.

The natural light usually occurs in the 'aurora zone' near the arctic poles, the north, and the south.

Aurora is caused by the collision of energetically charged particles with atoms in the high altitude thermosphere within our atmosphere.

Auroras are associated with the solar winds that flow past Earth. These winds flow out from the Sun and contain plasma particles (ionized gas) that get pulled into the Earth's magnetic pole fields.

As they accelerate towards the Earth, collisions occur between these ion particles and nitrogen and oxygen atoms in our atmosphere, releasing energy in the form of amazing aurora lights.

For our piece of art, we started off by ripping a piece of paper to make our hills, we taped that on hand flicked white paint onto make the milky way. Next, we used chalk pastels and drew on the white paper in a pattern with our choice of colors, I used pink, purple, and turquoise Afterward, we used different fingers to spread the pastel to create the lights, after everything has set you to use light yellow paint to create the Matariki stars, and you are done!

Here is mine:

Weekly work update!

Kia Ora bloggers,
Hopefully, you have had a great week this week, as now we only have 1 day until 2 term school holidays! This week in literacy we have been looking at the genre of sci-fi, and all of its conventions it has within it, as part of our sci-fi genre studies we had to look at what a dystopian world and a utopian world looks like a utopia is a perfect world with nice sandy beaches, modern houses, and healthy plants, one of the keywords in a utopian world is CONTROL because where there is not control can make a difference to whether or not it is a utopian or dystopian world. A dystopian world is the complete opposite, it has run-down buildings, dead plants, and abandoned houses. Our task was to create our own personal utopia, here is mine,

  • Malls with free things for my friends and I

  • Polished cities

  • Live in a big modern mansion with a pool

  • A netball court

  • Nice unpolluted beaches with clear water

  • Be skinny my whole life

  • Unlimited credit card

  • Expensive cars

  • A big walk-in wardrobe with lots of clothes, shoes, and makeup

  • Good lighting for tik toks

  • Palm trees

  • In summer, spring and autumn its always a nice hot temperature and in winter it either snows or is hot

  • Good places for photos

  • I will have an iPhone 11 and MacBook pro

What do you think of my utopian world? What are some main things you would have in your personalized utopian world?

For maths this week we have started to look at number and algebra, we have mainly been doing number patterns and writing the rules to the patterns, I have found it quite easy to write the patterns most times but just get a bit stuck on the wording for my rule.
Have you ever done number patterns?

Bye, everyone!

Binary/ASCII Bag Chain!

Kia Ora bloggers,
This Wednesday we were learning about Binary and ASCII.

Binary is a number system that uses 1’s and 0’s to represent all of our normal set of numbers.  You can use the place values as multiples of 2 to work out how to do it for yourself!  Try watching this video to give it a go yourself!

ASCII is a set of encoded symbols that a computer uses to turn Binary into letters and other symbols from the English language (like what is on our keyboard).  I turned my initials into binary numbers, and then turned those binary numbers into an ASCII code!  Using colors to represent the 1’s and 0’s, my initials in ASCII can be represented by the pattern you see in my image below!

What do you think?  Have you ever tried encoding anything in binary or ASCII?  Could you have a try for yourself?

Week Of Work!

Kia Ora bloggers,
How has your week at school been? Do you like being at school better than doing your online learning? I'm still not sure whether I like online learning or normal learning better. I was very excited to get back to school and see my friends, although things haven't been completely normal I find things are slowly getting back to normal.
This week for literacy we learned how to make our own websites, we are making websites to present our Wizard Of Oz essays on, we have to use at least 8 TEXAS's, TEXAS means Title sentence, explain, example, analysis, and summary. We have to have our websites done in 3 weeks. This is a quick view of mine.

This week for numeracy we have been drawing shapes out of different 3D blocks, first, we got some 3D blocks and made shapes out of them, we made drawing out of 5 blocks then we went to 10 then we made one with 15 blocks, we had to draw these onto a piece of isometric paper. These are some of mine.

Animal living - Friyay task!

Kia Ora bloggers, today I chose to do the "living on an animals back", Friyay challenge, this challenge included

  • What animal's back would I live on? A Turtle as their backs are steddy and hard and they don't move to fast. (of course this would have to be if I shrunck alot!)
  • Is it possiable to live on an animals back? No I don't think it is, as almost if not all animals are far to small for any person to live on them.
  • Who would I live with? I would live with one or two of my friends as I think it could get quite lonley and boring on an animals back.
  • What would I need in order to liver there? I think I would need all of the ordernairy things you need to live along with having to nail down most things so they don't fall and break.
I made this as the design of the house quite a open plan so it wouldn't take up to much room after all turtles backs arn't very big. If you did this fun task what animals back would you choose to live on?
Bye everyone!

Friday cake design!

Kia Ora bloggers, today's Friday task was to choose a task from the 3 options, I chose to design a cake, for this task you must,

  • A theme (like rainbow unicorns or lego or space)
    At least 5 layers.
The only stuff that can be be made of cake or icing.
Your diagram must show us The flavor of each layer
    The decorations for each layer.
    Colors for each layer.
Any surprise features (e.g. a volcano inside)

the cake I designed has 3 tiers, 3 flavors (white vanilla bean, strawberry & cream, and lemon), the decorations for my cake are gold icing/fondant gold/star sprinkles and icing, my colors inside the cake are a marbled blue, my surprise feature is when you cut the cake open blue/star sprinkles come pouring out. this is the cake I ended up designing.

Dreadful Disappointment (Wizard of Oz theme)

Kia Ora bloggers, one of my literacy tasks this week was to complete the 3 questions on the second slide, these questions were multi-choice and about the theme disappointment if you want you can go check out my other blog posts to see the other themes we have done for the wizard of Oz. Shaw lit - Narritive!

Kia Ora bloggers,
In the past couple of weeks in my literacy group, we have been doing mystery narratives, we had to do at least two pages of our writing, this is my story.

As a cooling wind hurled through my bedroom window my eyes softly closed and my mind fell into a deep sleep until I awoke to soft whispers coming from the basement, I quickly shoved a pillow into my face to deafen the whispers but the more I thought about it the more it changed from a whisper to a screech,  at this point the horrific sound was leading me to panic more and more.

All I wanted to know was where this sound was coming from. Before I knew it I was standing in my in front of my door staring down the dark blank hallway,
“this might have possibly been the scariest night of my life!” I thought in my head,
I just wanted my parents to come out and comfort me, but about 6 months ago my evil grandmother unimaginable and slaughtered my parents!

To this day it is still a mystery to police about where my parents are and if they are dead or not. But my only hope of being semi-happy was to live with my grandmother and just pray she doesn't do the same to me. As tears started to roll down my face the screech became louder but less frequent, so I just did it I made a run for it I ran to the end of the hallway, before quickly hiding beside the couch as I heard a loud thumping coming down the rustic stairs,
“it must be grandmother” I anxiously thought in my head, I tried my hardest to stay quiet but I couldn't help it tears started to roll down my cheeks and a slight sobbing sound alarmed my grandmother, she then said in a furious voice
“Whos there!”

Before I even had time to think about it I ran down the hall and there I was standing in front of the tall brown door, the only thing that would stop me now was the padlock. I knew my grandmother, this padlock wouldn't just have any random passcode there must be a clue somewhere! I swiftly moved my eyes from one corner to the other,
“This isn’t like grandmother, there must be a visible clue somewhere” I had thought to myself.
Until a small flashing light caught my eye, I started to stroll down the hall to have a peek at this magnificent find until once again I heard my grandmother marching down the hall, I moved my head from side to side until a small built-in cupboard was visible, I swiftly reached for the cupboard and threw myself inside, as the cupboard door closed I realized it had a number engraved into it,
“Oh my gosh” I had thought to myself
“This could be a clue to the basement!” I had said in a great moment of joy.

As grandmother passed my heart skipped a beat, but finally, she had gone and given up on finding me, I gently re-opened the tiny cupboard and continued my search for the miniature light,
“There it is!” I tried to say as quietly as possible,
I tiptoed as quietly as possible over to this miniature light, and as I got to the light I realized it had projected a small number onto the wall, I could only just read the number,  as I only had one more number to find now I swiftly moved back to the padlock and had a good long stare at it,
 “Ah-ha” I had yelled,
I had found the third number, on the back of the padlock! Now I had to figure out what went where.

I rapidly figured out the code. I weakly pushed the basement door open and a pungent odor fried the insides of my nostrils,
“This has to be done,” I said as I tried to reassure myself,
But before I could pull out a screeching sound pierced my ears, after this piercing sound finished I tiptoed down the creaky stairs, I was shocked to see what was down there! All I could think was what, when and most of all why! But before anything could be done a soft whisper came from above the stairs, I carefully turned myself around to see grandmother standing at the doorway, I could feel my hands freezing in position.

“Why would you disobey me? Why?!” grandmother screeched from the top of her lungs,
I was speechless I tried to get a mutter out but before I could the door slammed and my grandmother marched away, I ran to the top of the stairs and thumped on the door but it was useless, I slumped into a small ball on the ice-cold ground and just sobbed,
“I am never going to get out of here” I had said,
“Don't worry?” said a voice in the distance,
As the voice appeared closer and closer I wiped away the tears and picked up and old rag on the ground hoping to defend myself,
“Don’t worry it’s just me” the voice muttered again
“Who’s there!?” I instantly yelled back,

As the voice came closer it started to sound more and more familiar, but who was behind this unordinary voice?...
